Understanding Diamond Clarity
Clarity grades measure the presence of internal characteristics (inclusions) and surface features (blemishes) in a diamond. These natural features are like fingerprints - they make each diamond unique. The fewer and smaller these features, the higher the clarity grade.
The Clarity Scale
- FL (Flawless): No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification. Exceptionally rare
- IF (Internally Flawless): No inclusions visible under 10x magnification; only insignificant surface blemishes
- VVS1-VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included): Inclusions so tiny they are difficult for a skilled grader to detect under 10x magnification
- VS1-VS2 (Very Slightly Included): Minor inclusions visible under 10x magnification but not to the naked eye. Eye-clean
- SI1-SI2 (Slightly Included): Inclusions noticeable under 10x magnification and sometimes visible to the naked eye
- I1-I3 (Included): Inclusions visible to the naked eye that may affect transparency and brilliance
Our Standard: VS1 and Above
CRTD Diamonds only offers diamonds graded VS1 or higher. This means every stone we sell is guaranteed eye-clean - you will never see an inclusion without magnification. Our range includes:
VS1 - VVS2 - VVS1 - IF - FL
Clarity and Different Cuts
The importance of clarity grade varies by diamond shape. Step-cut shapes (emerald, Asscher, baguette) have large, open facets that act like windows into the stone - inclusions are more visible, so higher clarity grades are recommended. Brilliant-cut shapes (round, cushion, oval) break up light into many small reflections that help mask inclusions, so VS1 is excellent for these shapes.
Choosing Your Clarity Grade
For most buyers, VS1 offers the ideal balance. The diamond is eye-clean, and the savings compared to VVS or FL grades can be invested in a larger carat weight or better cut. For step-cut shapes or if absolute perfection matters to you, consider VVS1 or above.
