Carat Guide

Understanding Carat Weight

Carat is a measure of a diamond's weight, not its physical size. One carat (1.0ct) equals exactly 0.2 grams or 200 milligrams. The word "carat" derives from the carob seed, which was historically used as a counterweight on balance scales due to its remarkably consistent weight.

Carat vs Size

Two diamonds of equal carat weight can appear different sizes depending on their cut and shape. An oval or marquise diamond will appear larger face-up than a round of the same carat weight because more weight is distributed across the surface. Similarly, a well-cut diamond will appear larger than a deep-cut stone of equal weight because less carat weight is hidden below the girdle.

Our Carat Range

CRTD Diamonds offers standard sizes from 1.0ct to 5.0ct in half-carat increments:

1.0ct - 1.5ct - 2.0ct - 2.5ct - 3.0ct - 3.5ct - 4.0ct - 4.5ct - 5.0ct

Choosing Your Carat Weight

The right carat weight depends on your budget, the intended setting, and personal preference. Here are some practical considerations:

  • Budget allocation: We recommend allocating your budget to cut quality first, then choosing the largest carat weight that fits within the remaining budget. A well-cut 1.5ct diamond will look more beautiful than a poorly cut 2.0ct
  • Finger size: Larger carat weights have more visual impact on smaller fingers, while very large stones may feel out of proportion on petite hands
  • Setting style: A halo setting makes a centre stone appear larger, while a solitaire showcases the diamond's true size
  • Shape matters: Elongated shapes (oval, marquise, pear) appear larger per carat than compact shapes (round, cushion)
